Saudi Arabian Medal for the Liberation of Kuwait

Date Instituted: 1991.

Campaign: First Gulf War 1990-91.

Description: This medal is in the form of a star with 15 long and 15 short rays surmounted by a bronze circle with a globe surrounded by a wreath and topped with a crown. Above is a palm tree with crossed scimitars while below is a scroll bearing the inscription 'LIBERATION OF KUWAIT' in both English and Arabic.

Metal: White metal.

Size: 45mm.

Clasps: None authorised for this medal.

Ribbon: Green with red, black and white stripes of varying width at either edge.

Naming: Issued un-named.

Comments: This medal was awarded to all allied personnel who took part in the liberation of Kuwait from the Iraqi invaders. While service men and women from most countries involved in the war (including those of the commonwealth) are allowed to wear this medal British troops have been denied the right to wear it in uniform.
